COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This virtual course will address the multiplicity of  problems confronting the clinician dealing with rehabilitation of the knee.  Patients with these pathologies demand an "attention to detail" which is frequently not provided.  This course will attempt to "contextualize" the learner to the historical development of the majority of commonplace procedures utilized in the clinic today through historical presentation, as well as developing an appreciation of the relevant literature of yesterday and today.  It is hoped that personal opinions will be shared by participants, thus providing a fertile garden for exchange.  The course is designed to allow a rich appreciation for the management of selected knee conditions.

Instructional level: Intermediate

Recommended audience: PTs, PTAs, ATCs

Learning Outcomes:

• Upon completion, the learner will:

  1. Be able to explain the components of the knee examination sequence.
  2. Be able to discuss the history and present thought regarding anterior and posterior cruciate ligament surgery, total knee surgery and rehabilitation of each.
  3. Be able to demonstrate special techniques to be applied for selected problems related to immobility and capsular restrictions.
  4. Be able to explain the differences in extensor mechanism rehabilitation related to instability, friction, tension and compression.
  5. Determine the specifics of rehabilitation based on the forms of meniscal surgery.
  6. Explain the general concepts for return to play decision making.

Instruction Level: Intermediate. The learning outcomes and objectives are relevant for inter-professional practice and education (IEP) programs; and can be applied across the client's lifespan in a variety of settings (schools, private practice, clinics/hospitals)
